France Lotto History

FRANCE LOTTO HISTORY

The lottery is a game of chance which one may also know as gambling. The start of the 20th century was not a good one for the lottery games as they were considered illegal gambling. This unacceptable perception with lotto was also prevalent in Europe. Yet, the opportunity for having a national lottery was promising because it paved a means of raising funds to benefit good causes other than taxes. Today, the Lotto France is managed and operated by Francaise Des Jeux, of which the French government owns 72% of its stake.

Loto France was formerly known as the French National Lottery or SLnLn (Société de la Loterie nationale et du Loto national). During its first public appearance in 1976, the lotto outlets were only located in Paris, then it gradually increased until it is possible to buy lotto tickets nationwide. Since its inception in 1976, it has changed the lives of about 7900 by becoming a multi millionaire in Francs currency. Then in 2002 when the Euro was introduced about 150 more were multi millionaires under the new currency system.

Creating millionaires is not the only benefit of having a lottery. As mentioned earlier, the lottery was legalized and regulated by the French government to fund various aspects of government services for the people of France. Proceeds of Francaise Des Jeux lottery go to the National Center for Sports Development or the CNDS (Centre National pour la Développement du Sport) and since 1997 it has been financing the French cycling team. It also provides financing in the field of health.
